Probably one of the best games I’ve played is Batman, Arkham Asylum. I got hooked on Batman games back in the 1990’s, with the back then famous Batman The Movie. I loved the gameplay with the Batmobile and the Batwing. So what do you know, I was almost planning on sleeping in front of the game shop, to aquire the newest game, Batman, Arkham City.
Well, for those of you who played Arkham Asylum, the follow-up Arkham City is a quite a different game. In some ways City is superior to Asylum, but sometimes the other way round.
Arkham Asylum is superior to its successor in the cinematic way. Arkham Asylum is much more of a horror genre, while Arkham City is much more like an action movie. Asylum builds up suspense, and once you get used to the suspense, a twist happens, worsening the situation and inttroducing a new suspense. Arkham City, lacks this cinematic feeling.
Another point in which Arkham City fails towards its predecessor is that the Main Story is actually very short. I finished it in 10 hours. I played mostly the main story, and not the side-missions, and it was quite disappointing to see the end-titles of the game, while having it completed for only 32%.
A good thing about Arkham City though is playing with Cat Woman. She is definitely harder to play with than Batman, because she’s more fragile. And here moves absolutely introduce a new angle in the gameplay. Cat Woman solves puzzles differently than Batman, and that’s quite a lot of fun.
In the end, I would say that Arkham Asylum is better than Arkham City, because it is deeper and more thrilling. But this doesn’t mean I didn’t like Arkham City. I still play it with a lot of fun. Now doing the sidemissions, you need to search your own entertainment in the world Rocksteady created. Having seen reviews from other people, and experiencing the same thing, after all it isn´t that big surprise that this game was sold at big discounts, even before release.
Arkham city is not a winner, but also not a loser. I´d call it more of just above mediocre game.
